Paver calculator

Count pavers, base stone, bedding sand and edge restraint for a patio, walkway or drive. The base depth is the manufacturer’s call, so it is a field you control, with Belgard and Unilock guides to start from.

Where the numbers come from.

Why do I have to choose the base depth?

Manufacturers disagree. Belgard suggests 4 to 6 inches for a patio or walkway. Unilock suggests 6 to 8 inches in established areas and 8 to 10 inches in newer developments, more for clay soil, and deeper again for driveways. Unilock’s own calculator warns that its base chart does not account for soil, gravel type, compaction or paver thickness. Pick a guide, or type your own depth.

Where do the other defaults come from?

Paver waste is 5 percent for running bond or stacked, 10 percent as a common default, and 15 percent for random, fan or curved layouts; Unilock’s sample spec asks for at least 5 percent. Bedding sand is about 1 inch and never over 1.5 inches. The 15 percent stone allowance covers compaction and voids, where guides quote 10 to 20 percent, and stone weighs about 1.4 to 1.7 tons per cubic yard.
