Good to know

Where the numbers come from.

Where do the defaults come from?

Mulch depth of 3 inches follows Home Depot’s calculator, and 2 to 3 inches is the usual advice. Weights per cubic yard are typical ranges: mulch 0.2 to 0.4 tons, dry topsoil 1.0 to 1.3, and gravel or crushed stone 1.4 to 1.7. Waste is 5 to 10 percent for mulch and soil and 15 to 20 percent for stone that will be compacted. Each default starts in the middle of its range, and you can change it.

Why does my supplier’s number differ?

Weight per yard changes with moisture and with the product, and suppliers sell in their own steps. Type your supplier’s weight and order step, and the calculator rounds up to that step.

Why are there no tons for compost or sand?

There is no researched weight for them, so tons stay hidden until you enter your yard’s figure.
